Some months the practice hums and the receipts pile up. Other months are thin, a festival lull, a slow season, a stretch of leave you finally took. Your income does not arrive in a neat monthly line the way a salaried friend’s does. It comes in waves, and the waves do not keep a calendar.
And so spending follows the waves too. A good quarter feels like quiet permission to relax; a thin one feels like worry you carry into the consulting room. You are earning well across the full year, yet the rhythm never settles, and saving becomes whatever happens to be left over, which is almost always less than it honestly should be.
Irregular income is not a weakness to apologise for. It is simply a different shape, and it needs a different system. The salaried world saves what is left after spending. That logic quietly fails you, because in a lumpy year there is no steady left-over to count on. The fix is to invert it: decide the saving first, smooth it yourself, and let spending live downstream of that decision rather than ahead of it.
Pay the steady version of yourself first; let the waves break after that.
Start with a buffer account, money that sits between the practice and your life. Good months overflow into it; thin months draw from it. Decide a figure you can pay yourself every month regardless of the season, set deliberately below your worst months, not your best. That becomes your steady salary. From it, a fixed amount can flow into investments automatically, so a slow February no longer pauses your future.
The lumpy surplus, the bonus months, the festival surge, can then be deployed in tranches rather than spent on impulse or parked in guilt. A reservoir does not change how much water arrives. It changes how steadily it reaches the field. That is the whole trick, and it is surprisingly calming once it quietly runs on its own, month after month, without needing your attention or your worry.
In two decades of working with people whose earnings refuse to behave, I have noticed the calmest are rarely the highest earners. They are the ones who built a steady rhythm the lumpy income simply could not disturb. This is a personal view, not a prescription, and your own numbers will shape the details. But a reservoir between the work and the wallet has quietly steadied more households than any clever product I know. The waves will keep coming, season after season, as they always have. They simply no longer have to set the tempo of your life or your family’s peace.
