You bill by the hour. Your money shouldn’t sit idle by the decade.

Hardik Joshi, Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) · 5 min read

You know the precise price of an idle afternoon. An hour unbilled is an hour gone, and you feel its absence in a way that is almost physical. Yet money that earns nothing for years rarely stings the same way.

The retainer clears, the fee lands, and it settles quietly into a savings account where it sits, patient and entirely unproductive, while you turn your attention to the next brief. You would never let your own time lie fallow like that, not for a week. Your capital, somehow, is granted a permanent pass.

The opportunity cost you never invoice

This is the quiet asymmetry that runs through professional income. You are exacting, almost ruthless, about the value of your hours, and curiously relaxed about the value of your savings, even though the second compounds, or fails to compound, far longer than any single engagement ever will. Money parked in a low-yield account is not safe in the way it feels; measured against inflation it loses ground slowly, year upon year, and the loss is perfectly real even though no invoice ever records it and no client ever queries it. You measure your time to the minute. Your capital deserves at least a fraction of that same attention.

An idle hour you notice. Idle money you forget. Both carry a cost.

Put the surplus to work, deliberately

The fix is not dramatic, which is exactly why it keeps getting postponed past another busy quarter. Decide, in advance, where the surplus goes the moment a fee clears: an emergency buffer first, then a long-horizon portfolio you resolve not to touch. Automate the movement so the decision is made once, calmly, and not renegotiated in the middle of every hectic month. This is a personal view, not a recommendation, and it carries the usual caveats: equity can fall hard, horizons genuinely matter, and your temperament will decide whether you stay invested when the falls arrive. But idleness is a choice too, quietly made by default, and it is the only one on the table with no upside at all.

What to remember

  • Idle capital loses to inflation quietly, with no invoice to flag it.
  • Decide where each fee goes before it arrives, then automate it.
  • Buffer first, then a long-horizon portfolio you leave alone.

Over the years I have watched diligent professionals build handsome practices while their savings drifted, untended, in a current account for a decade. The talent was never once in doubt; the attention had simply gone elsewhere, as it tends to. The ones who turned the corner all did the same small thing: they began to treat their surplus with the same plain respect they gave their time. The money did the rest, slowly, in the unhurried way that money does when it is finally allowed to. Nothing about it was clever, and that was rather the point of the whole exercise.
